65% or TKL keyboard: which layout suits you?

A keyboard’s layout is about how many keys it keeps and how much room it takes on your desk. Two layouts are enthusiasts’ favourites: 65% and TKL.

The 65% layout: compact yet complete

A 65% keyboard keeps the letters, numbers and arrow keys, but drops the function row and the number pad. It has around 68 keys.

It frees up plenty of room for your mouse and is easy to carry around. The F keys remain available through a function (Fn) key.

The TKL layout: the classic keyboard, minus the number pad

TKL stands for “tenkeyless”: a full keyboard with the number pad removed. It keeps the function row and the Insert, Home, End, Page Up and Page Down cluster.

It is the right choice if you often use the F1 to F12 shortcuts or want to keep your usual bearings.

How to decide?

  • short on space or want a really cute keyboard: go for 65%;
  • you work with the F keys or navigation shortcuts: go for TKL;
  • you need a number pad every day: mention it in your quote request.
